About Nag Champa
Nag Champa is one of the most—if not the most—popular incense fragrances in the world. It gets its name in part from the Champa Flower, also known as Plumeria, one of the main ingredients in Nag Champa incense.
Ingredients of Nag Champa
Traditionally, Sandalwood is another key ingredient in Nag Champa Incense. Since the prices of sandalwood have increased so much in recent decades due to shortages caused by exploitation of the sandalwood trees, alternative fragrances or synthetics are often used. Another key ingredient in Nag Champa Incense is, or was, halmaddi, which is a gray, semi-liquid resin from the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus tree). Halmaddi has also become rather expensive in recent decades, so other resins, often from evergreens like pine and cedar, are often used instead.
Other ingredients can be added, too, and they can vary. Different makers of course have different tastes, and so their Nag Champa blends can differ. Some makers prefer a more sweet smell, and so may add more sweet fragrances such as vanilla or strawberry. Others prefer more spice, and so may add a hint of black pepper. They may add other oils, powders, and resins, to get the scent they are going for. Some other example fragrances that can be found in Nag Champa blends are cinnamon and French lavender.
